Welcome to year 2!

A to B!

Our topic this Spring term is called ‘A to B’ which is a Geography-heavy unit, covering different modes of transportation.  To dive into our new topic we watched a video of a rocket being blasted into space.  We then designed our own rockets to be sent to space!  Have a loook below!

In Science, we will be covering the unit ‘Living things’ which is all about things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive. We will be identifying different habitats, food chains and naming a variety of plants and animals, including microhabitats.

In Geography, we will be building on our Geographical skills and fieldwork by understanding what a map is and how to use one as well as how to create our own. We will look at world maps, globes and atlases as well as using simple compass directions. This links into our topic which is all about transport and travelling from A to B.

In D&T, we will be getting practical by making a simple vehicle and understanding how the mechanisms work to make the vehicle move.

English

In English, we will be studying a range of books all linked to the theme of transport. The first book we will be focussing on this term is called, All Because of Jackson, by Dick King Smith which is about a bunny wanting to explore all the world and all the seas in a tall sailing ship. We will be using this book, along with James and The Giant Peach, by Roald Dahl to guide and influence our writing.

We will be writing for a variety of purposes and audiences to broaden children’s understanding that writing is important and it’s seen all around us. Children will be given the opportunity to be creative with their writing and continue developing their passion for reading and writing through story. We will be reading lots of inspiring texts this term as part of Guided Reading and ensuring the children’s comprehension is enhancing, as well developing inference skills and fluency and expression when story-telling.

Maths

In Maths, we will be covering: money, equivalence, fractions, number problems and statistics. We are using the Mastery scheme of work for our Maths learning which means we focus closely on these 4 strands: fluency, application, reasoning and a focussed challenge to extend children’s mathematical thinking.

Homework

Homework will be sent out on Thursday and should be returned to school on Tuesday. The homework menu allows children to choose which homework they would like to do each week based on what subject interests them the most.  Please date the menu to show which homework has been completed each week.

Reading Records are to be in school every day whether your child has read or not. Reading books may be changed daily if the Reading Records have been signed by an adult to show a book has been read. All Reading Records are checked regularly to ensure that children are reading at home. If you would like to volunteer to come into school to read with children then please do let us know.
