Edenbridge Primary School is at the heart of the local community.  Many opportunities for the children to be part of this are planned to ensure a sense of pride and purpose in the place that they live.  Around that, we ensure they develop an appreciation of the wider world around them.  This includes ensuring a wide diversity of cultures and backgrounds are reflected in the resources and content that is taught as well as an awareness of the international matters that are prevalent in today’s world.

We are ambitious for our children.  We want them to leave our school feeling proud of themselves and confident that they can achieve great things in their lives.  To achieve this we ensure our curriculum is ambitious for them and raises their own aspirations; this includes giving them opportunities to achieve well, exposure to understanding different careers and learning options – including higher education and/or running their own businesses.

At Edenbridge Primary School our core purpose is to ensure our curriculum gives our pupils a strong foundation in the basic skills thereby improving outcomes for all learners.  With a clear focus on the early acquisition of early number and reading skills, including phonics/spelling, number bonds and times tables, it gives our children the necessary skills they need to access a wider curriculum.  We recognise that we need to have a culture of reading to develop a love of reading in our children – including ensuring our children have knowledge and experience to allow them to access all genres of text.  Our curriculum leaders ensure units of work provide depth, so that concepts are introduced in a logical sequence, subject-specific knowledge and vocabulary are gained progressively and the skills are developed securely over time. We also plan opportunities to practise skills taught across the curriculum eg handling data in Science experiments or a survey in RE, writing diary entries as a historical figure.

Children’s physical health and fitness is seen as an important part of their curriculum entitlement.  We know the health benefits of participating in sport, and a specialist PE teacher ensures that all children have the full two hours of PE each week – covering a wide range of both competitive and non competitive sport.  We have a wide range of extra curricular opportunities that children are encouraged to participate in so that they can develop a life long interest in sport and a greater understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Through our curriculum, including using the International Primary Curriculum’s personal goals, opportunities are planned for children to develop skills and qualities such as confidence, communication, adaptability and empathy.  This includes ensuring that children are supported so that they can achieve at all levels but also that all children, including our most able, are given opportunities to be challenged, thereby developing their resilience when faced with failure – learning the important skills around how we learn when we don’t achieve at the first try.

We are aware of the importance of supporting children’s mental health and wellbeing at Edenbridge Primary School.  Our PSHE and RE scheme of work, ensures that children are taught to develop their opinions, whilst respecting others’.  They are given opportunities to reflect on the world around them – they are encouraged to talk and most importantly to listen to one another.  We have a nurture provision that gives children additional support who may have barriers to their learning and social awareness skills.  This early intervention is designed to help children develop skills and confidence that will allow them to fully reintegrate back into their class and curriculum as they are ready. 

Around that, our curriculum is designed to ensure that all our children have a breadth of learning experiences and subject content taught to them over their time at school.  This is enriched through focus days, visitors to school and visits to external places including residentials so that children are immersed and fully engaged in their topics.  It is planned so that there is clear progression from previous learning – ensuring enquiry and thinking based skills, transferable skills, underpin everything.
