Year 4 - IPC - Different Places, Similar Lives



In maths, we will be exploring money applying our understanding of decimals as well as our four operations to give change. Throughout this unit, children will continue to use their problem solving and reasoning skills in order to answer money problems. Following this, we will be investigating time, understanding how to read an analogue and digital clock. Then, we will be applying our understanding of statistics to create line graphs and read data effectively. The final topic in year 4 will be geometry, children will be exploring physical 2D & 3D shapes and understanding their properties. 


English: Gregory Cool

Our Power of Reading book this half term is 'Gregory Cool' by Author and Illustrator Caroline Binch. This book is linked to our IPC topic 'Different places, similar lives' as it tells a story of young boy who has to is immersed into a new culture and has to learn to adjust to this. Across the half term we will developing our skills using commas to separate clauses, using past and present tense effectively and editing and improving our writing. 

Gregory Cool Blurb - 'When Gregory wakes up on his first day in Tobago with his grandparents, his heart sinks. The food is strange, the sun too hot, his cousin Lennox is on another wave length, and there are none of the televisions, video games and other high-tech gadgets that a cool city-boy takes for granted.'


Science: States of Matter

In science this half term we will be focusing on States of Matter. We will start by understanding the properties of different states of matter. Using this knowledge, we will categorise a variety of materials into solids, liquids and gases. We will be learning the melting and freezing points of materials. As well as plan and perform our own experiments testing if we can change states of matter. ‚Äč
